Hi Debbie:
You already emailed me at my e-mail address but since I'm on this board, I'll answer you here.
The Redwood Inn
PO Box F-41417
Freeport, Grand Bahama Island
Bahamas
tel: (242) 373-7881
fax: (242) 373-6154
Manager: Joyce Ewing
Number of Rooms: Either 18 or 28
website: http://www.caribbean.org/grand_bahama_island/
This is what you would call a low budget "motel style" property located across from the new mega Lucayan Hotel complex (phase 1 of the new hotel is purported to be ready to open for April 1/99). The Redwood Inn is next to Port Lucaya Marketplace and Marina. So the location is good.
Port Lucaya Marketplace and Marina is a waterfront complex with several good restaurants (Zorba's, Luciano's, Fatman's Nephew, Shenanigan's, Junkanoo Sports Bar & Grill, Cowboy's Restaurant), small bars (Kaptain Kenny's Rumrunners, Daiquiri's, Pub at Port Lucaya, Bahama Mama Bar, Corner Bar), Illusions Jazz & Comedy Club, and free entertainment in the Count Basie center square under the gazebo (live music each night except Tuesday with Lil' Joe Cartwright and his band).
You can sit back and drink a frozen Margarita (check out the happy hours and 2 for 1 specials at many of the bars), a frozen fruit daiquiri (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), Kalik or Hammerhead beer, a Bahama Mama, a Yellow Bird, a Kamikaze, Sex on the Beach (tropical drink), etc. Feast on appetizers such as fresh conch chowder, conch fritters, etc. Try the key lime pie at Fatman's Nephew (an upstairs restaurant with great view of marina from its wide balcony deck).
The Redwood Inn's units have kitchenettes. The units range from rooms to efficiency studios to apartments. There is a miniscule pool and terrace area. The bus stop is across from the parking lot of Port Lucaya Marketplace. This is a low-rise, three story property.
Amenities include color TV, air conditioning, ceiling fans. Rooms have small mini-fridge while the efficiencies and apartments have kitchen facilities including refrigerator, stove, oven, and microwave. The rooms and units are average, somewhat run down and time worn and in need of some refurbishing. But if you're looking to save money, this is what you'd consider a low budget property.
In the Port Lucaya area, I would recommend three other hotels far that are much nicer, but a little more expensive.
1. The Lucayan (I got an e-mail from their e-mail list website that they are offering specials of $79 per night for the opening from April 1 - June 30/99) -- so this might interest you.
2. Port Lucaya Resort & Yacht Club
3. Pelican Bay at Lucaya Hotel
I would go with any of the top 3 rather than the Redwood, unless economy is what you're looking for.
The buses run until 7:00 p.m. and cost 75 cents one way (you pay when you exit the bus and not when you enter) and please have the exact change. I usually give the bus driver $1.00. The bus can take you to Wynn Dixie supermarket in the Seahorse Plaza in Lucaya, just about 10 minutes away by bus. You can also take the bus to the International Bazaar, Bahamas Princess properties, Princess Casino and the Main straw market all in the downtown area.
Debbie I will e-mail you about the Sea Escape and Discovery that you asked me about.
Best regards
Carrie
