You can use US dollars freely in The Islands Of The Bahamas. There is no benefit to changing US into Bahamian Dollars. In fact you may not be able to find outside of Bahamas. Travelers checks are fine but may be difficult to change in smaller establishments. Better to use cash or plastic. You can also draw money from ATM's which are located in many places but primarily in the casinos - make sure they are ATM's and not the cash advance machines which charge a percentage commission.
As for car size - it depends on the size of your group - like here in US - would the four of you be comfortable in a small car for extended periods of time. Book something then when you arrive look at upgrading if you are not happy with the size.
